Who wears watches anymore?

Liisa of Gem App was wonderful enough to approach me and let me chat about one of my all time favorite vintage accessories - watches. If you’re new to collecting watches and want some guidance on what to look for and what to expect, or even if you’re a seasoned collector, this article has photos of some of my favorite watches I’ve collected and sold over the years. Hope you’ll give it a read!

Describe your design style in one sentence:

A love of what came before, re-imagined for the present.

Which color expresses your personality and why?

Persimmon. It’s a warm, sultry, and happy color that I think buzzes with a mellow, curious energy and that’s generally my M.O.

What do you listen to when you’re creating?

Most boring answer ever but – nothing. When I’m creating I’m so focused on my work that anything more than the birds outside distracts me (stopping what I’m doing to start singing and then creating playlists is a real problem). I envy those who can listen to music or podcasts!

What are your current design goals?

To see more of my designs in interior settings. Creating a space to live in that speaks to our creative selves has always been massively important to me and I’d really love it if the designs I’m creating moved someone to use them as a wallpaper, bedding, or integrated in some other way into their homes. I think that’s one of the highest compliments to receive as a designer or artist – someone wanting to live day in and out with your work around them.

What influences or inspires your work?

For my design work here, it’s vintage fashion and fabrics. I love looking back and seeing interesting color combos that have fallen out of modern use and giving them a second life in my work, or design movements that left such an important mark in the history of art, design, and fashion but aren’t widely known today, then re-imagining them to echo these styles forward into modern fashion and décor.

Share a defining moment that shaped your creative path:

There have been so many, but the biggest ones were being young and having adults give me, not only free reign, but encouragement to chase creativity. Especially when you’re young that’s incredibly important. So often we discourage people from pursuing the arts and I’m lucky that I never experienced that, and I think it’s one of the biggest defining aspects of my life as an artist – that not only is it important to chase the arts but it’s a worthwhile profession that deserves respect. Artists should be able to thrive. Knowing this from a young age has allowed me to prioritize my creativity as an adult.

What are your favorite design tools or mediums?

For the designs I create here I rely heavily on digital tools, mostly the Procreate app.

Share your tips for creating new design collections throughout 2020:

I always recommend a sketchbook. Not anything that has to be polished or for anyone but you, but somewhere where ideas can mingle until you find a common thread, then actively build from there.

Want some insight into what it takes to be a vintage seller & how Sultry Vintage got started?

The truly magnificent Dominique de Merteuil featured my shop and I got to share how I started in vintage, talk about my own collection, and offer advice on how to begin a vintage collection. (2018)

She then was wonderful enough to ask me to write a guest blog post and expand upon this infographic I put together that breaks down the cost associated with, time and knowledge required, to do this job. It was a thrill, a joy, and a privilege to be able to share my point of view and talk about my shop with her. (2018)
